Windows hacks are produced every day. The latest is a Windows security virus included in image files. The image hack affects Windows service pack 2 computers
On January 4, 2011, Microsoft sent an advisory that warned of new Windows vulnerabilities. The image hack affects the security of the Windows computer. If the user is logged in to the computer with an administrative user name (included in all versions of the Windows operating system since Windows NT), the hacker can take control of the computer. The Windows administrator account has full access to all of the computer configurations and file system. The hacker can then create a local user account, leaving a back door for the next time the hacker wants to access the Windows computer. The hacker can also remotely control the computer and lock out the user.
How the Image Hack Infects Your Computer
The Windows image hack affects the Windows Graphics Rendering Engine that displays images on a Windows computer. The hacker sends malicious code embedded in the headers of an image file. The image exploit must be included in a Microsoft Word or Powerpoint document. The email message persuades the reader to open the file and click on the thumbnail image. The exploit then runs code on the Windows computer without the reader’s knowledge. Having access to the administrator account lets the hacker do anything to the computer, and it can lead to stolen information, passwords, identity theft or data destruction. It may also allow the hacker to obtain access to other computers on the network and read email messages.
Windows Operating Systems Affected by the Exploit and Malicious Code
Most Windows operating systems are susceptible to the Windows vulnerability. Windows XP and Vista are the client systems vulnerable to the Windows exploit. For server software, Windows 2003 and 2008 are open to the malicious code, but only if the server operating system has service pack two installed. Windows 7 and server software with no patches are not vulnerable, according to Microsoft’s security update page.
Microsoft is currently working on a hotfix to protect Windows computers. Microsoft always recommends to keep a computer updated with the latest service pack for the Windows operating system. In this case, the latest patch is the culprit. Users should not remove a Windows update to protect the computer. Instead, make sure you have the latest virus and firewall updates for your computer. Be careful of any images or documents you open on the computer. Some email client software warns you about running malicious code, but some clients such as web-based clients do not show you any warning before you open a file.
