In this video, I answer a question from Promzy from youtube who asks “what is overclocking, what good does it do for your pc or laptop. And how do you do it?” Thanks for the question Promzy. The wikipedia definition of Overclocking is here en.wikipedia.org . I’ll try to keep it as general as possible. “Overclocking is the process of running a computer component at a higher clock rate (more clock cycles per second) than it was designed for or was specified by the manufacturer, usually practiced by enthusiasts seeking an increase in the performance of their computers.” You can think of Overclocking as a turbo charger for your computer. There’s a lot to this topic so watch the video for more on it.
Today Linus takes a look at the new Phenom II X6 processor from AMD and also shows us how to “push it to the limits, in only a few minutes”

The holders of the world records and holder of near world records in overclocking, uses liquid nitrogen (and if I remember right from school it’s about -194*Celsius) Its even incredible that your computer survives the cool.. Because the average home electronics is designed to withstand temperatures at minimum -5 degrees celcius (much warmer than liquid nitrogen), and at a maximum of 120 degrees celcius.
Can I add , generally if Intel is making a 3.5ghz and a 3.8ghz processor what they actually do is try and make all 3.8ghz processors. in the past the ones that would not run at 3.8ghz were locked to 3.5ghz. Today, generally they just take a certain number and lock them to 3.5ghz as the process is good enough now days to make them all able to run at 3.8 . – numbers used here were made up
Blue thing on the wall is a binary clock. It’s around 8:25
Thank you really helped (:
@gohog3 It’s called a binary clock.
@gohog3 Its a clock
@14kskim i lol’d hard
That shit helped me thx bro go Gators!!
Lol, that funny thing on the wall that made Square things, eventually made the shape of a Penis! Im just immature…
will it help gaming speed?
wtf is that shit in the background yo? some nerd clock?
Thumbs up if you were staring at his digital buttons thing in the top left hand corner instead of paying attention to him. Lol
@gohog3 ist called a bianary clock!
theyre epic
thanks i get it now
@iLaughatInsanity Maybe he wants some Good-Ol’-Fashioned Cola!
The Badass alternative art KFC Colonel Sanders on the wall is God damn epic and so fucking lulzy.
Because he’s black.
And blacks like fried chicken.
HAHAHAHAHA!
@iLaughatInsanity LOL
@gohog3 think its one of those clocks
i overclock until my dick goes hard and hot
@gohog3 its a binary clock, i think.
i agree with everything he said and if U don’t,,there somit rong with you!!
discrace to the black race
This is not recommended
. There is a factory overclock setting. ASUS computers have them. Its a safer way to overclock. Alienware also has a factory overclock. If you dont know much about Your Computer 101 Do Not Manually Overclock.
ty very much sir
i have the same board but i got 1090T can i use the same settings?
@SUBW00F3RR one eyed intel fanbois
yeah got the same mboard!
I used the turbo evo program that came with it and I was able to do a stable 3.9ghz aprox. 4ghz. Can I get it higher if i do some quick ocing like he did in the bios? Say, 4.2-4.4 max? I am new to ocing so don’t bug me if i explained something wrong.
@yousufafroz try
Face at 3.41 :’)
@anhtuan1t then overclock to 3.6 and overclock turbo core to 4.ghz. you can do it both in the bios and in amd overdrive.in the bios you have more options but in amd OD you can do a basic OC by just adjusting the multiplier and increasing voltage but you can’t oc past turbo cores frequency so move up turbo core B4 your main frequency ppl say its more stable threw bios but honestly i don’t see a difference
Holy crap, i want that monitor!
Hi Linus
Thanks for the quick response. The three fans are located like this
1) on top of the processor in a tower chassis 2) top of the chassis in line with the processor at a dist of 5 inches 3) back of the chassis horizontal to the processor at a distance of 3 in. Based on this info, is it possible to overclock 1055 to 4 GHz. Additional info, I use only Ubuntu.
@yousufafroz Depends where the fans are, what case, and your CPU Cooler most importantly
Hi Linus,
loved this video, just a question. I have a 3 fan case for my cpu will that be enough for me to overclock my 1055 to 4 GHz
Hey Does anybody know where they got that motherboard rack/holder lol?
I liked it
need a link please
@xXDMS2k11Xx no.
is’nt that linus from linustechtips? O_o
@GamerSpaceHD yea.. i went throught the whole range
@xmodrock Hmmm did you also try different voltages?
@GamerSpaceHD then why do 10000 other people have it oc’d to 4.2.. could it be my chip?
@seth922 Yes
@xmodrock Might be to much for the cpu
is this a unlockabel procesor
I put together a new computer using an Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 Motherboard. I have not installed Windows 7 as of yet. I purchased an ASUS LE247 LED Monitor. When using the HDMI cable I can not get into the BIOS, the monitor reads, “VGA No Signal” nothing happens, but when I use the VGA cable it works fine, I can get into the BIOS. Can you tell me why the HDMI is not working?
what if I leave the turbo core function on, and overclock cpu?!? What does that mean?? I just want to overclock the turbo speed to 4.0 while leave the normal frequency at3.6 How could I do that???
i got a black edition and im trying to get 4.2GHz.. can’t manage it
